  • What to Look for When Evaluating a Dietary Supplement

    Dietary supplements are regulated very differently from prescription drugs — in the US, the FDA does not review or approve supplements for safety or effectiveness before they reach store shelves. That doesn’t mean every supplement is low quality, but it does mean the burden of evaluating claims falls more heavily on the reader. Here’s a practical checklist our editorial team uses.

    1. Check whether the research is about the product or the ingredient

    This is the single most common source of misleading marketing. A study showing that an ingredient — say, an amino acid or plant extract — had an effect in a clinical trial does not automatically mean a specific supplement containing that ingredient will have the same effect. Dose, formulation, purity, and combination with other ingredients all matter. Look for language that distinguishes “this ingredient has been studied for X” from “this product produces X.”

    2. Be skeptical of absolute claims

    Phrases like “guaranteed results,” “cure,” “reverses,” or promises of a specific amount of weight loss or symptom relief in an exact timeframe are red flags. Legitimate supplement marketing in the US is legally required to avoid disease-treatment claims and typically uses structure/function language (“supports,” “may help maintain”) instead — not because companies are being coy, but because stronger claims would put them outside what the category is allowed to claim without drug-level evidence.

    3. Look for transparent labeling

    A full “Supplement Facts” panel with each ingredient and dose listed separately is preferable to a vague “proprietary blend” that hides individual amounts. Third-party testing seals (such as NSF, USP, or Informed Choice) indicate a product has been independently checked for label accuracy and contamination, though their absence doesn’t automatically mean a problem — many legitimate smaller brands simply haven’t pursued certification yet.

    4. Consider interactions and existing conditions

    “Natural” does not mean risk-free. Several common supplement ingredients can interact with prescription medications (blood thinners and St. John’s Wort is a well-documented example) or aren’t appropriate during pregnancy or with certain health conditions. This is the main reason to loop in a doctor or pharmacist before starting something new, especially if you take any regular medication.

    5. Read refund and guarantee terms carefully

    A money-back guarantee is a reasonable thing to look for, but check the actual terms: what counts as a valid return, whether shipping is refunded, and how long you have. Guarantees that are heavily advertised but vague on specifics are worth a second look.

    None of this means every supplement is a scam — plenty of ingredients have genuine, replicated research behind them. It means reading past the headline claim to the actual evidence and label before deciding.

  • Understanding Age-Related Changes in Metabolism

    “Your metabolism slows down as you age” is one of the most repeated lines in casual health conversation — and it’s broadly true, but the details matter more than the slogan suggests.

    What actually changes

    Basal metabolic rate — the energy the body burns at rest — does tend to decline gradually with age, but research published in the journal Science in 2021 found the decline is smaller and later than commonly assumed: relatively stable through most of adulthood, with a more measurable drop typically after age 60. A large part of the change earlier in life is linked to loss of muscle mass (which burns more energy at rest than fat tissue) rather than aging itself as a direct cause.

    Hormonal shifts play a role too

    For many women, the hormonal changes around perimenopause and menopause coincide with shifts in fat distribution and how the body handles blood sugar, independent of any change in diet. For men, testosterone gradually declines with age in a way that can affect muscle maintenance. These are normal physiological transitions, not signs of a broken metabolism.

    Why the same routine can stop “working”

    A workout and eating pattern that maintained a certain weight in someone’s 20s may not produce the same result in their 40s or 50s, simply because muscle mass, hormone levels, and activity levels have often changed too. This is a biological shift, not a personal failing — and it usually means routines need to be adjusted, not abandoned.

    What tends to help

    Research on healthy aging consistently points to two levers with the most evidence behind them: resistance training to preserve muscle mass, and adequate protein intake to support it. Cardiovascular exercise, sleep, and stress management all play supporting roles. There is no evidence that any single food, supplement, or “trick” can substitute for these fundamentals — claims that suggest otherwise are worth reading skeptically.
